HEALTH - If you’re one of the millions of women living with chronic pelvic pain, there’s new hope in New York City. NYC Health + Hospitals has officially launched the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Program, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary initiative designed to provide faster diagnosis, advanced treatment options, and coordinated care for women suffering from endometriosis and other causes of chronic pelvic pain.

Why This Program Matters

Chronic pelvic pain affects an estimated 20 million women in the United States, and endometriosis alone impacts 1 in 10 women nationwide. Despite its prevalence, it often takes up to a decade for a woman to receive an accurate diagnosis. Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, sometimes affecting the ovaries, intestines, or bladder, leading to severe pain, fatigue, and infertility.

“Endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain have too often been dismissed or misunderstood, particularly among women who face barriers to timely diagnosis and treatment,” said Wendy Wilcox, MD, MPH, MBA, FACOG, Chief Women’s Health Officer at NYC Health + Hospitals. “Our new program listens first, believes our patients, and delivers equitable, coordinated, multidisciplinary care.”

Comprehensive Care for Women with Endometriosis and Chronic Pelvic Pain

The program, led by Dr. Vijay Palvia and Dr. Daniel Barraez, offers a full range of diagnostic tools, medical therapies, and minimally invasive surgical procedures. Patients benefit from a collaborative care team that includes physicians, surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, mental health providers, and social workers. Treatments may include:

  • Hormonal therapy for endometriosis

  • Multimodal pain management strategies

  • Pelvic floor physical therapy

  • Lifestyle and nutrition interventions

  • Minimally invasive surgery

  • Mental health support and counseling

“We are excited to provide a service that has been long-awaited, particularly for our diverse and underserved population,” said Dr. Vijay Palvia. “By integrating advanced diagnostics, physical therapy, mental health support, and coordinated follow-up, we aim to transform the care experience for women living with complex pelvic pain.”

How to Access the Program

Women can be referred to the Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Program through any NYC Health + Hospitals gynecology practice. The program is part of NYC Health + Hospitals’ broad range of women’s health services, which include primary care, family planning, prenatal and postpartum care, menopause and fibroid treatment, gynecologic oncology, and pelvic health programs.

Why Multidisciplinary Care is Key

Chronic pelvic pain is rarely caused by a single issue. It can involve gynecologic, gastrointestinal, urologic, musculoskeletal, and neurologic factors. By providing coordinated, multidisciplinary care for women with chronic pelvic pain and endometriosis, NYC Health + Hospitals ensures that patients receive a personalized treatment plan addressing all aspects of their health.

“Our goal is simple,” said Dr. Daniel Barraez, Co-Director of the program. “We deliver high-quality, compassionate care that meets our patients where they are and supports them through every stage of their journey.”

With this initiative, NYC Health + Hospitals is taking a major step forward in improving women’s health in New York City and beyond, ensuring that endometriosis and chronic pelvic pain are no longer misunderstood or undertreated.
